Door Lock Installation Bethesda, MD

Lock Installation

Project Description

After a string of break-ins in Bethesda, MD, one store owner decided to boost security by adding an extra deadbolt lock to their front door. For assistance on their new door lock installation, they called us at MacArthur Locks & Doors. The client chose a new B series commercial-grade deadbolt lock from Schlage. They selected it for its dependable security and durability. With the help of this handy lock installation kit, we could drill and create precision boreholes using the guide template. That made our job a lot easier. In less than an hour, we finished the door lock installation professionally. The lock installation looked great, and our lock expert did not take long to do the job for them. As a result, the store owner can now have peace of mind knowing that multiple locks protect their store.

One way to increase the security of your home is to install a deadbolt on your doors. A deadbolt is a door lock with a bolt extending further than standard locks, making it more difficult to force entry. Unlike regular door locks, deadbolts are sturdier and resistant to pressure and force. Consequently, they are a more secure option than traditional locks, which are prone to failing and being easily manipulated.

How Do Deadbolt Locks Work?

Deadbolts are highly effective at preventing doors from being forced open from the outside. Typically, the lock consists of one or more cylinders connected using the latch. It creates a strong and lasting lock by inserting a metal bolt into the hole in the striking plate. Deadbolt locks can only be opened with a key on one or both sides.

Three Major Components of Deadbolt Locks

  • The lock's cylinder is the component into which the key is inserted to activate the lock. A tapered cylinder provides much more security than an untampered cylinder.
  • A bolt is the metal component that secures the door to the frame. When locked, the bolt should extend at least one inch over the door's edge and be made of strong metal such as reinforced steel.
  • A strike plate is a piece of metal attached to the door frame's inside. The striking plates bolster the bolt's strength by preventing it from ripping through the door frame when pushed open. To provide optimal security, line the strike plate with the door's lock and use screws over 1 1/2 inches into the door frame.

Types of Deadbolts

There are two types of deadbolt locks available. Depending on the application, you may choose between an interior deadbolt or a surface-mounted door lock.

Interior Deadbolt

While internal deadbolt locks are more challenging to install, they give far more protection against thieves and robbers than external deadbolts. An internal deadbolt is installed inside the door, and the bolt makes contact with the strike installed within the door. The door's exterior is secured by a key or combination lock, and an internal latch protects the interior of the door. Intruders will have a tough time deactivating the lock due to this configuration.

Surface-Mounted Lock

Installing surface mount locks is a simple process. They are ideally suited for providing privacy or preventing someone (such as children) from accessing an area they are not permitted to. A sliding bolt attaches the door to the door frame when it is mounted on the door's surface (door jamb). The door has a key entrance lock on the outside and a deadbolt lock on the inside. A night latch is a term used to describe a deadbolt lock mounted on a door's surface.

Use Deadbolt Locks to Protect Your Business

You can never be too careful when it comes to the security of your business. One way to help keep your business safe is by installing a deadbolt lock. Deadbolt locks are an inexpensive way to build a solid security system. These locks are designed to resist tampering, prying, and drill attacks. Installing one is crucial in areas with high traffic and reported crime rates. If you need to update your locks and make you feel safer, do not hesitate to contact a commercial locksmith from MacArthur Locks & Doors.
